Conklin holds off Malone for Late
Model title,
Smith stays perfect at Orange Show
Speedway
SAN
BERNARDINO – Jim Conklin did what was required to win a
championship and Tom Smith stayed undefeated for the year
Saturday night at Orange Show Speedway.
Conklin,
54, of Big Bear, went into the final points race of the season
for the BSR West Late Models with a 10-point lead over Brian
Malone and needing to finish within four spots of Malone to
successfully defend his class title.
Malone,
40, of Grand Terrace, did all he could do by claiming his sixth
win of the season in dominating fashion. But Conklin did what
was necessary and finished fourth in the 30-lap main event,
behind Malone, Gerald Lair and Steven Werner. That gave Conklin
the championship by 4 points over Malone, with fifth-place
finisher Dave Arce, of Santee, 20 points back in third.
Smith, of
Lakewood, already had clinched the Lucas Oil Outlaw Figure 8
title. So the only question in that regard is whether or not the
32-year-old mechanic can complete a perfect season. That won’t
be determined until the final race for the class, on Oct. 27.
But after overcoming some pressure from Jay Henson in Saturday’s
25-lap main, Smith is 13 for 13 at the ASA-sanctioned
quarter-mile oval. And just for good measure he’s won his only
two starts at Irwindale Speedway, giving him 15 wins in all.
While the
Late Model title was decided and several other championships
were virtually clinched, the Street Stock division continued to
be a three-way battle with two races remaining, on Oct. 20 and
Nov. 3.
Bobby
Dezarov, of Palm Desert, went into the night with a 4-point lead
over John Reiman and a 6-point advantage over Cliff Conklin.
Kyle Meyer finished first in the 30-lap main event with Conklin
second, Reiman third and Dezarov fifth, and that left the three
men tied with 284 points apiece.
In the ASA
Stock Pony class, leader Jim Edmiston virtually wrapped up his
second title in three years by winning the 30-lap main over
Adrianne Murlin and Matt Goodwin. Edmiston, the champion in
2005, will take a 24-point lead over Goodwin into the season
finale Oct. 27.
Things are
even more one-sided in the Aflac Factory Fours class following
Tony Dumont’s fifth win in 12 starts. Leader Spencer Samaro, 18,
of San Bernardino, finished third and now enjoys a 60-point
advantage over Dumont with races left on Oct. 6 and Nov. 3.

Tom Smith
stays perfect with 10th win of year
in
Figure 8 main at Orange Show Speedway
SAN BERNARDINO – Tom
Smith said he was hoping the good luck he’s enjoyed throughout this
Lucas Oil Outlaw Figure 8 season wouldn’t run out for Saturday
night’s Summer Shootout.
It turned out to be a
needless concern. Smith set fast time in qualifying and raced to his
10th straight win in the 30-lap main event at Orange Show
Speedway, the ASA-sanctioned quarter-mile at the National Orange
Show Events Center.
The win, over “Barefoot
Billy” Ziemann of Bloomington and Rusty Stewart of Long Beach, was
worth $1,500 to the 32-year-old mechanic from Lakewood and
maintained his undefeated status.
The added-money event
brought out four new entries, including former champion Rod Proctor,
of Riverside. But Smith started on the pole in the 10-car field and
never was in danger of losing the lead in a race that entertained a
crowd of approximately 3,100.
Wildomar’s Matt Goodwin,
18, got his second Stock Pony win of the season by being in the
right place – third – when second-place Jim Edmiston and leader Jim
Mardis got into a shoving match on a green-white-checkered restart
after the seventh caution flag of what ended up being a 28-lap main
event.
Goodwin had led two laps
early, after leader Edmiston and second-place Mardis inadvertently
got together when Waldo Barber spun on lap 9. Edmiston was forced to
leave the track to have bodywork pulled off a tire and dropped to
the rear of the field, then worked his way back to the front after
Mardis took the lead on lap 12. He got by Goodwin for second on lap
22 to set up the final incident.
The Stock Pony fireworks
were the kind most often seen this season in the BSR West Late Model
races. But Saturday night, that class ran an uneventful 30-lap main
dominated by fast qualifier and pole-sitter Steve Smith, 32, of San
Bernardino, in his Chevrolet-powered Dodge Intrepid. Smith led every
lap and the top three of Smith, Jim Conklin and Dave Arce never
changed.
One Conklin did make it
to victory circle when Cliff Conklin, 50, the younger of the
brothers from Big Bear, captured the 30-lap Street Stock feature
over fast qualifier Kyle Meyer, 19, of Highland.
Chad Schug of Oak Hills
capped a perfect night of Legends Cars competition by winning a
crash-filled 25-lap main event that saw only nine of the 17 starters
running at the finish. Schug, 20, also set fast time and won the
4-lap Trophy Dash and an 8-lap heat race in his scale-model ’37 Ford
sedan.

Chad Schug wins thrilling Legends
race while
Tom Smith stays perfect at Orange
Show Speedway
SAN
BERNARDINO – Tom Smith stayed perfect and Chad Schug got the
perfect ending to the best race of the night Saturday at Orange
Show Speedway.
Smith, 31,
of Lakewood, overcame two early spins and the strong car of Jay
Henson to win his 11th race of the season in the
Lucas Oil Outlaw Figure 8 class. Schug, 20, of Oak Hills, won
his second straight Legends Cars main event and third of the
season when Gary Scheuerell bobbled exit Turn 4 on the final lap
after a terrific six-lap duel between the two.
Scheuerell,
51, of Murrieta, had taken the lead on lap five of the 30-lap
feature while Schug was working his way up from 13th
on the starting grid. Schug accomplished that when he took
second away from points leader Bree Brewer on lap 20.
Schug got
the bumper of his Yamaha-powered 1937 Ford replica in front
briefly with three laps to go, but Scheuerell quickly reclaimed
the top spot and was in position for his second win of the
season. But when he slid high exiting the final turn on the
final lap, Schug charged through for the win and Brewer moved up
a spot to finish second.
Smith, who
started the evening by being the fast qualifier for the eighth
time, won his heat race, but saw his main event win streak in
jeopardy after spinning on each of the first two laps. It was
his good fortune, however, that other in the seven-car field
blew engines, broke parts and brought out numerous cautions.
That gave
Smith time to overtake Henson and then pull away to win
comfortably.
Brian
Malone, of Grand Terrace, and Steve Smith, of San Bernardino,
waged a race-long, 30-lap battle for the win in the BSR West
Late Models with Malone holding on despite constant pressure
from Smith, who had won here two weeks ago. Smith inadvertently
bumped Malone twice, but never was able to get in position to
attempt a pass.
It was the
fourth win of the season for Malone, 39.
Jim Mardis
got his third win of the season and his 19th in the
past 35 races by running away with the 30-lap ASA Stock Pony
feature. Mardis, who also set fast time, took the lead from
points leader Jim Edmiston on lap 14 and drove away from the
field.
There was
a three-way tie for the Street Stock points lead when their
30-lap main got under way, but none of the three – Cliff
Conklin, John Reiman and Bobby Desarov – were factors in the
outcome after early spins forced Conklin to pit for a flat tire
and left Reiman back in the pack. Hemet’s Jesse Cottrell came
out of the caution-filled event with the victory and Desarov, of
Palm Desert, came out with a 4-point lead in the standings after
finishing fourth to Reiman’s sixth and Conklin’s seventh.
